William J. Jefferson received a bachelor's degree from Southern University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He earned an LLM in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He was elected to the Louisiana Senate in 1979, where he served until 1990. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served from January 3, 1991 – January 3, 2009.
In 2009 he was tried on federal corruption charges and found guilty of eleven of sixteen counts. He served five and a half years of his initial thirteen-year sentence in federal prison.
